With iOS-4, the integrated App Notes has the option to synchronize with multiple IMAP accounts, including Gmail and MobileMe. When you set up MobileMe or Gmail (not about Google Sync / ActiveSync / Exchange, but the Gmail button) there is a toggle switch to activate sync with notes on or off.
If you can synchronize notes for multiple accounts, you get a new account button at the top left of the Notes App. Tap it to get a new screen where you can view all the notes, but only the notes on your iPhone or just the notes that are synchronized via IMAP to your e-mail account (s).
Those notes will appear on your desktop and web-based IMAP clients as well as Apple's Mac Mail.app (in Marker Felt, ugh!) And Gmail.com.
